And now for something completely different!

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

Well, mostly different. In which updates are provided. And eye candy is down below.

I am very pleased to report that Donman lost his case against some of the other girls he was suing, so score one for the good guys! And The Toronto Star editors chose my photo from our article as one of their November favourites.

I am not a huge fan of how tired I look, but it has great composition to be sure. And I am proud to be able to take a stand against those who harm others. Yes, it takes time and effort and can be stressful, but in the end it is much more rewarding to know that you have done your best for what is right and good.

I know a lot of my blog posts have been about things only peripherally related to my acting career as of late, and have read like the ramblings of a manic-depressive complete with grenade launcher monkey on caffeine, but rest assured that I am still going strong, and nothing and nobody is going to stand in my way! For example, I now have more IMDB credits than I did a few months ago, and there are several exciting things coming up in terms of projects for me. Film is a lot of hurry up and wait, so I am trying not to be too impatient in between days on set… One thing that has been going quite well is improv. I am moving on to a third team of fabulous folks from the Impatient Theatre Company, Lincolnshire Poacher, and recently, a group of us had a great time performing at a fundraiser for the Sunburst Award. Thanks to Jim, Candace, Victor, and Dan for joining me!

And now, for the different! One thing I haven’t done in way too long is photography. Hell, I have photos from MAY that I haven’t uploaded yet. But aside from calling myself slacker extraordinaire, the reason I bring this up is because I am selling off the existing prints I have kicking around my apartment. There are multiple copies of a few of them, but most are one of a kind. Once they’re gone, they’re gone… and honestly, they are just sitting in my portfolio at the moment, so I would rather sell them off to people who will appreciate them. And if you are going to buy in bulk or want to purchase in person, let me know! We can work out a deal on shipping costs/etc.

For all of the below, I have posted photos from my DevArt account. Let me know the name or link of the print you want when you do the Paypal thing (or send an email if you’re likely to see me in person), and it’s yours!

Thanks for looking!

I would love to promise another fun update soon, but we will see if that happens before Futurecon.
(insert shameless plug here)

Come out to Futurecon!. It will be a great event, and we are fundraising for a great charity – Epilepsy Toronto. Plus, it will be a THREE DAY New Years party… and who else offers three days of fun for the price of one?

And if you have a product or service you think would fit well with the theme – and/or are willing to sponsor a part of the event – we would be very grateful to have you join us. The more money we can raise, the more goes to a worthy cause.

Leonard Kirk, the great comic artist will be there doing sketches. Robert J. Sawyer, his lovely wife Carolyn, Derwin Mak and JM Frey, are four of the talented authors that will be there. We are painting people purple! There will be a demo of some awesome upcoming Xbox games! And a ton more of things to do and unique events!

(end shameless plug)

Really, things are… mostly good. I am working with some great people on some great projects – was on set for some One Week in Windchocombe pickups not too long ago (photos are here for your viewing pleasure) and if anything, I am trying to figure out how to function without sleep because there are so many projects on my plate and items on my to-do list.

Now, off to catch up on accounting! Til next time… love you all!

An Actor’s Primer To Headshot Photography

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

As promised earlier in the week, I wanted to discuss actors’ headshots. Specifically, what goes into them, why they’re important, and what you need to look for as an actor when choosing a photographer.

Aside from having worked with a number of photographers for modeling and getting headshots of my own, I also have my own experience as a photographer to draw from. I’ve shot weddings, I’ve shot headshots for other actors, and I’ve done a fair bit of other portrait and other photography. You can see some of my work here and judge for yourself how much I know about photography.

First off, your headshots are your ultimate calling card as an actor. They need to be clean, feature your face and eyes (ie show that you have life and passion), and show both who you are and what types of roles you can play. It should go without saying that you want them to be as professional looking as possible.

There are a lot of ‘headshot photographers’ out there, no matter where you are in the world. Some are good and do amazing work, and some are jerks with a camera out to make a quick buck off actors. One thing I can’t stress enough when it comes to choosing a photographer is to RESEARCH. Look at headshots other actors are using. Ask them where they got them done. Ask them who they’ve worked with and liked and who they didn’t like. See what prices you think are reasonable and what services you get for the prices listed. Look at sample galleries on the photographer’s website – does their current work make you go “wow”, or “meh”?
Even if you know nothing about the practical side of photography (what goes in to composing and lighting a shot), chances are you’ll still have a gut reaction to photos you see. Pay attention to that gut reaction – it’s important.

Two things you will want to have for sure when getting headshots done are full-resolution copies of the photos (so you can make infinite prints on your own and avoid paying ridiculous fees*), and to either have a photographer that does retouching on your final photos, or get yourself a copy of Photoshop and learn what goes into the editing side of things. Yes, there’s a learning curve attached to the latter, but it’s one more skillset that you can add to your toolbelt.
From the editing side of things, I can tell you that it takes all of a minute or two to resize a photo for the web. Any headshot photographer who will only provide you with low-res copies of photos and who wants to charge you extra money to do resizing or to give you hi-res copies falls into the latter category I mentioned earlier – a jerk with a camera looking to make a quick buck.
As for retouching, it is sometimes a bit more tricky, but still shouldn’t take more than 5 – 10 minutes per photo. Yes, you want to look your best in your headshots, but you also don’t want them to look over-processed, either. Good retouching means covering up any small, temporary flaws (pimples, tired eyes, hair flyaways, colour balancing) while still having the photo look like you.

Ideally, a great headshot will be crisp and smooth, without any blurriness, pixellation, or other flaws no matter what size you look at it. A photo that looks good at small resolution on a computer screen may not always look nearly so professional when printed on an 8 x 10 glossy. Beware of photographers who only present their work at low-resolution, or have limited samples with a lot of people against the same backgrounds/on the same couch/in the same pose/etc.

In terms of pricing, you will often pay for what you get. A photographer who charges less will often (but not always!) produce photos that are okay or passable versus excellent. Rates are generally set based on experience and training, and demand – but the occasional jerk with a camera might also ridiculously mark up his rates just to squeeze more money out of you. Fees like $50 or $100 to resize and touch up ONE photo are quite unreasonable for the work that goes into it. Another thing to be wary of is how adamant the photographer is about you using ‘their’ stylist on the day of the shoot. Yes, having someone to help with hair and makeup is essential for you looking your best, and most photographers do have a stylist they recommend, but like agencies who absolutely insist you use only their photographer, this is another sign of less than professional work.

Ultimately? Use your common sense and judgment when it comes to selecting a photographer. Research on your own, ask around, and listen to your gut. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and ‘interview’ the photographer to make sure they’ll be a good fit – after all, they’ll be working for you and you want the best results.

*As for the ridiculous fees that are associated with headshot reproduction, here’s a tip that will save you some money. Most printing shops can print colour copies on a heavy gloss paper (at least 100lbs, they’ll know what you mean) for around $1/page. Way cheaper than $5 or $10 per 8×10 that some places charge.

Emily’s life this week/month/etc…

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I’m trying to post more than once a month, really!
Recent stuff: My gala in Toronto went well… Olivia’s at 53 has some great food and wine, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a great night out! =)

Upcoming stuff:
-I’ll be filming a fun short next week where I’m playing a tough & unflappable Mafioso-type lady, with some snappy dialogue. It’s a local production, and I’m really looking forward to it!
-There’s a few other things in pre-production, but I’m slowly learning not to count my chickens before they hatch… so I’m trying not to talk about projects until we’re actually in production. (And then there’s the recent project I did for some exciting new technology… and that is ALL I can tell you guys right now. Man, I’m worse than a little kid with a secret, aren’t I?)
-In July, I’ll be a guest at Polaris, an awesome sci-fi and fantasy convention in Toronto. I’m super-excited to be there for the weekend and will be hanging out with Craig, Derek, and possibly Keith; we’ll be promoting A Shadow Shall Fall, talking about the production, signing autographs, and will have some awesome exclusive merchandise at our booth. Plus, there’s a few other surprises in the works… more details will come when I can give them!
-Lastly, there’s a few more auditions in the next little while, too… I’m always always always hungry for more work, which is something I think is really important for any actor.

One of my facebook contacts has been sharing daily quotes… I’m going to leave you with a couple that have really stuck with me:
“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.- One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn’t pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore faith in yourself.” Lucille Ball

“To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labor, to be given the chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy. As everyone else, I love to dunk my crust in it. But alone, it is not a diet designed to keep body and soul together.” Bette Davis

Another Quick Update.

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Hey look, another blog! So soon! (And so short, coz I’ve got some other things to finish tonight.)

Acting: Tuesday saw me doing some cool improv/clown work for an in-development film project just outside of Toronto. And I just found out that I’ve been cast as a sort of mafiosa (female crime lord) in a local project shooting in June. Pretty cool stuff, though I’m still also hoping for the jobs with the larger paycheques attached. *grin*

Photography: My work is now hanging at Olivia’s at 53. (53 Clinton St. in Toronto) Come on out Sunday May 31st at 8 pm for my gala reception!

(I’ve also decided that for my birthday this year, I want to do a gallery show of some of my current work – urban decay and ghost stories, that sort of thing… more thoughts on that later.)

Quick Update…

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Acting stuff: is going reasonably well; I’ve borrowed “Acting For The Camera” from a friend to read, to brush up on a few things, and I’ve decided to try and read a play a week to keep my brain active. Aside from the local/Toronto auditions I’ve been attending, I’ve sent one off to a fellow in Montreal for his very intriguing project.
I will be on set tomorrow to film a trailer/early test for a film called “143″. I’m looking forward to it, even with a call time of “oh my god o’clock.”
As well, I took part in an interview on May 21st, with the folks at ThatChannel. You can check out the interview here.

Photography: well, I shot a wedding on Monday. I’m pretty happy with the way the pictures have come out initially – have I mentioned I’m not a fan of people who use photoshop excessively? I’m trying to define my style more and more, and I’m realizing that I’m all about colour. Vibrant colours where they’re appropriate, and shaping the absence of colour where that’s appropriate. And I LOVE natural light best. Studio lighting has its place, of course, but the way I shoot, I prefer to use what’s there as much as possible.

Life in general: As some of you know, I was in a car accident at the end of April. My car was totalled, but I’m mostly okay. There’s definitely some days where I’m more stressed than usual, and some days where various parts of me hurt a fair bit… but such as it is. I’m getting over it, and got my new car on Friday. So, baby steps there, I guess?

This Week in My Life…

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I’m having a busy but productive day (or week, or month) so far… this morning, I managed to get caught up on my accounting from the last month and a half (oops, for leaving it that long!) and got my hard drive backed up too. Yep, I’m entertaining and exciting.

Anyway, the Sunday gala and the screening of The Ticket both went well, and I was absolutely thrilled to see a lot of friendly faces in the audience last night. I hope everyone who came out enjoyed what they saw… and there will be a final version of the short sent out to more fests. As well, another short I was in, Justice will be making the festival rounds as well. When I have screening details, I’ll be sure to share them!

In terms of photography (mine), I’ve got a few shoots booked in the next few weeks – some portrait sessions, and a footy game for sure, and more urban exploration when I can get around to it. Went and did a previously-explored location with Alex the other week, and I’ll be sharing the shots from that as soon as I can sort through them.
In terms of photography (not mine) I shot more headshots on Wednesday with the fabulous Tanya O, so once those are back in my hands they’ll be up here on the site as well.

On the acting front, I’ve got a few more auditions coming up in the next few weeks, and as of now, have about five projects that will be shooting in the next few months. The first one coming up is some dark, twisted humour with Yard Sale From Hell’s The Dark Show, and that’ll be starting the first weekend of April.
With FBN Multimedia, there’s a film adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story in the works – a different sort of dark and sinister, and one I’m really looking forward to!
As well, I’ll be working with Small Crew Productions on a project shooting in and around the GTA, called 20 Something Summer. My character in that promises to be challenging in all sorts of good ways, and again I’m looking forward to starting production!
As if that isn’t enough, I’m also going to be doing some work with another local KW company, and as well, there’s another project that I can’t talk about yet, but suffice to say it will be 32 flavours of awesome when it’s released. So yeah, that’s a start to my spring/summer, and I’m eager to add more as it comes my way!

A Sort of Summary…

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

This next little while is happily busy for me. Two upcoming auditions, three film festivals, and a performance Sunday night. (I’d especially love to see you all at She Speaks, which is this Sunday at Kitchener City Hall, as I will be performing live!) Plus, a few other potential film and photoshoots, both in front of and behind the camera.

As well, I’ve decided that “general website maintenance” will usually be done on Sundays… so look for a few new links appearing then.

In the mean time, I would love for YOU (yes, you!) to check this out.

And I guess the biggest news is that I’m now a redhead again. *grin* Headshots should be up Sunday as well.

Upcoming Appearances, & more!

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

So, I’m sitting here watching Harry Potter, and getting ready for a few new & fun things. First off, I’ve made a fan page for my photography on Facebook, and I’d love for you all to become a fan, and help me promote my business!
Yes, I will be making a page for myself as an actor soon, too!)

Secondly, a short film I was in, The Ticket, will be in TWO film festivals in March.
It will be screening on Thursday, March 19th at 7 pm, as part of the Local Focus Two festival, at Kitchener City Hall, and on Sunday, March 22nd at 7:30 pm in Ajax, as part of the SCP Film Fest.

Lastly, I will be appearing in The Windows, one of the staged readings of She Speaks, happening Sunday, March 8th at 8 pm, also at Kitchener City Hall.

I would love to see YOU – yes, you! – at any and all of these events.

For those of you who are supporting me in my endeavours… thank you. =)
And yes, I do take notice of which of my friends and acquaintances actively support me in what I do… suffice to say that your loyalty and support are dearly appreciated, and will be more than returned in kind. <3

New & Noteworthy!

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

This week is scary.

Scary as in super-busy, and potentially stressful for me. Nothing I won’t survive, but I’m anticipating not getting enough sleep (I know it’s coming) and everything that I need to cram into the next 48-odd hours… and yeah. Calm blue ocean, calm blue ocean.

First off, I got the last of the photos from my January special done and off to the respective clients, and Twice as Nice photography has finally finished the brochure. So, that’s something, at least… and we’re in the process of booking a wedding already. Some new photos are up on my Flickr from a couple other shoots I did this month.

I’m also in the middle of updating my stills page… soon, there will be a few snaps from a commercial I recently did for TA Appliances. If you scroll down past the Film & TV section, you will find the newly-added commercials section!

More timely, though… FASS opens TONIGHT. I’m doing formal photography at the after-party, and then tomorrow, I’m supervising the food between shows. Eeep. Saturday, I have two auditions in Toronto… and then there’s closing night of the show.
I still need to find time in the near future to get more headshots done, too! And, sadly, my taxes aren’t going to do themselves this year, so there’s that, too.

One day at a time, I suppose.

Off to get ready for tonight!

“Good Housekeeping”

Monday, January 26th, 2009

There really aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything I’d like to do. Or the night, for that matter.

The thing is – I’m great at making to-do lists, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I tick the items off one by one. But I have this tendency to over-schedule myself, and generally be busier than I should be, so some of those items (like “put laundry away when it’s fresh out of the dryer”) tend to fall a little by the wayside. If I ever get ‘famous’  – as in, having people with cameras camping outside my house – I’m going to need to get blackout curtains, so they don’t see the mess inside.

Anyway.  So… I have an audition tomorrow for an internet project, which could either be really exciting or really silly. Maybe both. And, in a week and a half, I’ll be doing FASS. Come out and see it! But don’t bring any small children or easily disturbed friends; it’s got a fair bit of adult content this year.

In other big news, I’ve been interviewing with various talent agencies over the last couple of months. Obviously, it’s a big decision and not one to be rushed into… but I’ve finally narrowed my decision to two potential agents.  I’m hoping to have a final decision by the middle to end of the week; it’s harder than one would think, to weigh out all the pros and cons of who you think you’ll work best with and who will do their best work for you. Like someone said, an actor doesn’t want to join up with an agency that’s so large and impersonal that they hear “oh, you. I forgot about you” when they call in to see why they haven’t been submitted for any auditions in the last six months. Not that I’m worried about that.

For those of you wondering, my to-do list for today:

  • invoice a couple of photography clients
  • audition prep
  • put laundry away (heh.) and other housecleaning
  • pick out a few photos for a photo contest
