If the world ends, remember that I love you.

Things aren’t all bad, as my last blog entry might have you thinking. And I had no small number of people question whether I’d want to post something like that publicly…

If I hadn’t thought thoroughly about what to say or how to say it, I wouldn’tve posted it. But if nothing else, I am brutally honest like that. I know I’ve been letting a lot of people down in small ways lately and I haven’t been nearly as focused on working as an actor lately as I would like to be. I’ve been so in my head and not attached to my body, it’s not even funny. But I’m changing that. Getting my sealegs back.

I like that expression, sealegs.

Here’s the first of my new headshots. Done by Callback Headshots. I can’t say enough good things about Dan. He’s got a great sense of humour, and is easy to work with. The shoot felt so short! And there are some photos I really like, which is rare for me.

Oh, and I got a tattoo. Don’t worry, it’s coverable if needed, but also awesome.

More to come soon, darlings. I’ve missed you all.

News, projects, fundraisers, Polaris 24 post-mortem… the usual…

Summer seems to be the busiest season for everyone, hands down!

First off, if you take a peek at the website, you’ll notice there’s been a few updates – some new photos are up from The Witching Hour and Stiffs on the Green. There will be some photos from the Constellation Awards going up soon, too! (But have a couple in this post, for now.)
Though it’s still being edited and revised, I’m expecting to have my ebook out by the end of the month. Unfortunately, that’s had to take a back-burner to auditions, photoshoots, and film projects. And sleep, sometimes. Sleep is necessary at times. ;)

Me with Robert J. Sawyer

Not sure if I mentioned this, but I recently signed with a great new agent, JC at Just Canadian Talent. They haven’t quite updated the website yet, but it’s nice to be represented again and to have a second pair of eyes looking for auditions for me. One common misconception it seems a lot of people have is that when you have an agent they find you work – it’s not like that at all! Agents can often help you get more auditions and to be seen by more prominent casting director, but as an actor you should always be working for yourself regardless.

And speaking of work, I have a few exciting new opportunities coming up that I’m pretty stoked for. I’m doing some modeling for Metal Star Fashions – Mila Starr, the designer, is the same brilliant costume designer from Black Eve. I’ve been promised photos soon, so I’ll share them when I have them. And throughout August, I’ll be working with Department 7 Films again, this time on a feature film. I’ll be playing the principal role of Ivette in One Week in Windchocombe, and we are shooting on location in a beautifully derelict old farm. (link) Check this place out, is it not beautifully creepy?

Before you get scared off, I wanted to point you all to some great fundraisers I’ve been helping out with, ran by some awesome people. Please take some time to check these out, and contribute what you can. I think it’s very important to give back to the community and to help out those who need it – as an artist, as an animal lover, as a fellow human being.
First off, my friend (and fabulous Toronto actor) Carlos Diaz donated his birthday to charity and is fundraising for Chile (link), to help them build new homes after the devastating earthquake in Chile.
My best friend Kimi is running a similar idea, to donate money towards helping Bengals in need (link) also in lieu of presents for her birthday. This just makes her that much more awesome!
Another good friend of mine (and fabulous photographer) Tanya is hosting a barbeque fundraiser for North Toronto Cat Rescue (link). Even if you can’t attend, I know she would appreciate any donations you can make!
In other words, I’ve got some great friends doing some great and unselfish things, and I would really appreciate anyone who can helping them along!

Lastly, I’ve been asked a whole bunch about Polaris, what happened to the horror makeup workshop I was supposed to do, etc. To blatantly re-use what I sent as post-con commentary: “Aside from a few small snafus, I feel my improv workshop went off very well and was quite pleased to see so many people out and having fun.
I think I had about 20 – 25 participants at peak – some people came and went as there were other panels they had, and not everyone who showed up had tickets, but overall it seemed like everyone was quite enjoying themselves…
Also, I had a great time paneling with Ajay Fry, Violette Malan, Jo Frankel, Cindy Mohareb, and Sheena Callighen. And as mentioned, I’d be happy to offer marketing suggestions for next year.”

The convention itself was pretty fun, and I got to see both a lot of old friends and make some new ones. It’s also a bit of an odd duality, as I was at Polaris to work as a professional actress, even though I am also friends with a fair number of the attendees and spent a lot of time hanging out. Helping out at the Constellations as their trophy girl was a blast, as Gavin Stephens and I spent a lot of time goofing off backstage, and I had a chance to chat and hang out with a lot of great Canadian talent. It didn’t feel like work at all! Also, Kai Owen was gracious enough to buy me a beer on Friday night – and it was pure awesome to see another actor who is very direct and honest. Sometimes I feel like we’re a rare breed – yes, there’s an ‘image’ to maintain a lot of times, but it bothers me when people are insincerely nice or just passive instead of speaking what’s on their mind. I also didn’t get much sleep throughout the weekend, which means everyone who dealt with me is that much more of a saint. ;)

The talented folks at the Constellation Awards!

Yes, my horror makeup workshop did get cancelled due to ‘lack of registration’, which was admittedly disappointing. From what I understand, there were three people registered to do it when they decided to cancel it, and the minimum they have ran workshops with in the past was four (a yoga workshop, last year.) My only real issue was that the workshops weren’t really adequately promoted ahead of time as other aspects of the convention were – even friends of mine who were attending didn’t know I was a workshop guest – and it’s hard for people to express interest in something they don’t even know exists. (If you were one of those registered for the horror makeup workshop and happen to see this, let me know and we’ll see what we can work out – I’m still happy to teach you!)
I see this as a learning experience, ultimately, and I’ve since offered to share my marketing knowledge to make next year more successful… so we’ll see what happens there!

One last PS: The Streets of London is my amazing new improv team, and we do shows at Comedy Bar. Check out the website, and come see us be silly!

Happy Friday!

December update!

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Wow, has it seriously been 4 months since I’ve blogged here? Ooops. Can I chalk it up to being busy? *laughs*

I’ve been back and forth to Toronto and other places lots lately… though, I’m pretty excited that my next project will be taking place here in Waterloo. To give you a brief recap of the last few months, September/October saw me performing as Mrs. Vixen in The Beggar’s Opera. The cast was phenomenal to work with, and I couldn’tve been happier to jump in last minute.
I also attended the premiere of Shimea, a martial arts fantasy film shot last year where I played an evil, manipulative shapeshifter. We had an excellent turnout for the screening, and it was great to see the final version, and catch up with fellow actors who I hadn’t seen since the readthrough.

Mid-October, I was in London to shoot The Witching Hour. There were a couple of long, intense days of shooting, but I am ridiculously excited to see the final product. And I can guarantee you that it will be scary as hell. You’d better bring a spare pair of socks when you see it, because it will scare yours off of you.
Towards the end of October/early November, I was in Toronto performing in Sex, Relationships, and Sometimes Love. With my already-hectic month, I came in as a performer part way through the run, and am very glad that I had the opportunity to work with the amazing cast and crew. I can’t confirm any detail for sure yet, but I can say that I would be happy to see a reunion tour. *grin*
As you might’ve seen on the main page of my site, I’ve been working on a couple of spec commercials throughout November, as well as doing a photoshoot with my dear friend Alex. Outside of that, I also directed and edited (yes, I was behind the camera!) a few short segments set in ancient Rome… it was my first time in almost a year where I played DOP (director of photography), but I’m happy with the way the first version has come out. Now, I just need to tweak a few things, add some sound effects, put in the appropriate credits, and that project will be off my plate til the spring, when we film more.

Lastly, I hate to count chickens before they’re hatched… but I’ve submitted the first film I directed, complex, to a local film festival. So hopefully it will get accepted! I’ve also got a couple of other potential-type prospects coming up… but I always irrationally fear jinxing things by talking about them too much, so I’m going to leave off here for now, with a vow to update this blog again within a month or less!

In the meantime, happy holidays to you all!

A Confession…

Friday, March 6th, 2009

It’s funny, as an actor you wouldn’t think I have these problems, but I do…

First off, I’m not always terribly comfortable in front of a (photography) camera. I keep getting reminded of this when I do things like get new headshots, which happened yesterday. (They’ll be up on the weekend, promise!) I keep making goofy faces and poses by accident, and I keep wanting to make even goofier faces on purpose because I don’t want to have a billion similar photos of me. See, I’m definitely a smiler in pictures… that whole sexy pout thing is totally lost on me. I can smirk, I can look totally radiant and grin from ear to ear… but I think I look kinda sad when I’m “neutral”… and, yeah.

Secondly… auditions. I recognize that they’re a necessary evil, and I usually get told that my auditions are “great”… but I’m never totally happy with any audition I’ve done. I definitely second-guess myself after, even if I feel like I’ve rocked it bigtime. Ah well… such is life. I’m a terrible perfectionist, to boot. :P

Anyway, off to be productive for a little longer before bed! Today’s been a LONG day, but it’s not over yet!

Still Busy!

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

This is going to be another short and sweet post. Unfortunately, I’m still sick… not sick enough to warrant staying in bed, but just enough to be annoying and have me coughing at inopportune moments (like when I’m trying to talk to someone else.)

Anyway, I did a fun, impromptu photoshoot this weekend with Alex Luyckx… the photos from that are up on his Flickr account. It was lots of fun, as always. =)

Aside from that, things on A Shadow Shall Fall are rolling along again smoothly… we now have three episodes sent out to the musicians, and more will be going shortly. ‘All’ that’s left now are the special effects, and the final colour and sound treatments. I say ‘all’ sort of facetiously, because it’s still a whole heap of work… but looking at where we’ve come from (started writing December 2007, did casting in April and May 2008, filmed June to August 2008, and editing’s been happening from September-ish onwards) we’re really not doing too badly for a production on as large a scale as it is.
To put things in perspective, our main cast was about 40, plus extras, plus the crew, and we shot nearly every day. On a project where payment is deferred, it means a hell of a lot of work for people who also have other jobs and projects. But, the ins and outs of production is a post for another day, I think…

My goals for the next week or so (outside of ASSF and social things) are to a) get my income taxes done, and b) get everything caught up in between my online and paper organizers. While I use and adore google calendars, having information at hand is always good. I’m a manic organizer bunny, I just can’t help myself. =P
