Announcing The BOOB Show! And… boobs.

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Happy 2011, everyone!

The good, part 1: despite any setbacks that came up, Futurecon was by and large a success. I will share final totals when I have them, but highlights included room parties running to 7 am, someone actually ponying up and paying $100 to sharpie me, some great conversations and brilliant friends, funnel cake (though I still did not get to eat any), 32 people in the 7 person hot tub, and a great group of people that I got to work with to pull this whole thing off. Anyone who was not there missed the BEST New Year’s party of the decade, hands down. I have never been as happy as I was… and now, we’re doing it again at the end of this year. ;)

The mildly amusing/annoying/’bad’: Frozen North now wants to “settle” – and by settle, they want me to sign papers saying that we won’t claim anything against each other and that they can just essentially sweep this whole thing under the rug.
I’m sorry, but I am not going to sign anything that essentially says it’s okay for them to have harassed me and gotten away with it, especially considering their blatant lies throughout this whole process. So yeah, I am filing my defense and counterclaim first thing tomorrow (want to know about lawsuits in the superior court? Ask me how!) and we’ll get on with the dog and pony show. Yes, it’s ridiculous, and yes it would be nice to not have to deal with it, but considering that they actively targeted not only me but a charity? I’m sorry, I’m not going to just roll over and take it. Some kind person has put together this blog here in my defense: Support Emily Schooley and while I am not certain of who it is, I am appreciative nonetheless that someone cares enough about the truth to keep a record of it. And yeah, it’s funny what goes on in the head of someone who is making a children’s game, essentially.

What I find wonderfully suspicious is that a friend of Julian’s, who I knew from my time in Windsor, messaged me rather out of the blue yesterday asking who put the site together and asking for her chat logs to be taken down, as she was involved in this as well. After I replied to her, my blog earlier today was “mysteriously” infected with malware (think it’s all clean now, sorry guys!)
You know, it sucks that other people are getting hurt by Julian’s idiocy and sexual depravity as well, but unfortunately, he tries to cover everything up with lies and threats rather than just owning up to his mistakes and shortcomings. I could have gone after Frozen North right when I was let go – for sexual and otherwise harassment, for wrongful termination – but I am not a petty, spiteful person. So I didn’t. Now, however, I think it is doubly important to fight back, as I am being punished, pursued, and harassed for not only defending myself against initial lies and harassment when they went on too long, but for fighting back against them as they escalate.

So yeah, you fuckers can bite me, long story short. I am not the bad guy here. I am not the office of 12 or so guys ganging up on one woman. I am not on the warpath, the offensive. I am not the one doing the harassing, directly or through ‘anonymous’ means. But I AM standing up to your empty scare tactics, and I will NEVER pretend this never happened, I will never give you the validation that you were right to harass me and then lie about it. I will never say it was alright for you, under the guise of an anonymous internet user, to target a charity event. I will carry this on as long as I need to, until Frozen North grows the hell up, admits to their mistakes and lies, and pays due reparations. Considering what they’ve put me through, I think it’s only fair. And like the title of my post, they are essentially being boobs. And not in the my awesome cleavage* sort of way.

The good, part two: 2011 is going to be a year of opportunities and changes for me, I have decided, and the first is that I am launching a webseries in conjunction with Wildsound called “The BOOB Show”. Check out the trailer for it here. First episode launches at the end of this week. I will be posting links all over when episodes come out – it may even be a weekly thing. I’m running with that whole ‘comedy’ thing like some people run marathons with scissors.

*It’s sort of an inside joke. And really has nothing to do with The BOOB Show.

And now for something completely different!

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

Well, mostly different. In which updates are provided. And eye candy is down below.

I am very pleased to report that Donman lost his case against some of the other girls he was suing, so score one for the good guys! And The Toronto Star editors chose my photo from our article as one of their November favourites.

I am not a huge fan of how tired I look, but it has great composition to be sure. And I am proud to be able to take a stand against those who harm others. Yes, it takes time and effort and can be stressful, but in the end it is much more rewarding to know that you have done your best for what is right and good.

I know a lot of my blog posts have been about things only peripherally related to my acting career as of late, and have read like the ramblings of a manic-depressive complete with grenade launcher monkey on caffeine, but rest assured that I am still going strong, and nothing and nobody is going to stand in my way! For example, I now have more IMDB credits than I did a few months ago, and there are several exciting things coming up in terms of projects for me. Film is a lot of hurry up and wait, so I am trying not to be too impatient in between days on set… One thing that has been going quite well is improv. I am moving on to a third team of fabulous folks from the Impatient Theatre Company, Lincolnshire Poacher, and recently, a group of us had a great time performing at a fundraiser for the Sunburst Award. Thanks to Jim, Candace, Victor, and Dan for joining me!

And now, for the different! One thing I haven’t done in way too long is photography. Hell, I have photos from MAY that I haven’t uploaded yet. But aside from calling myself slacker extraordinaire, the reason I bring this up is because I am selling off the existing prints I have kicking around my apartment. There are multiple copies of a few of them, but most are one of a kind. Once they’re gone, they’re gone… and honestly, they are just sitting in my portfolio at the moment, so I would rather sell them off to people who will appreciate them. And if you are going to buy in bulk or want to purchase in person, let me know! We can work out a deal on shipping costs/etc.

For all of the below, I have posted photos from my DevArt account. Let me know the name or link of the print you want when you do the Paypal thing (or send an email if you’re likely to see me in person), and it’s yours!

Thanks for looking!

I would love to promise another fun update soon, but we will see if that happens before Futurecon.
(insert shameless plug here)

Come out to Futurecon!. It will be a great event, and we are fundraising for a great charity – Epilepsy Toronto. Plus, it will be a THREE DAY New Years party… and who else offers three days of fun for the price of one?

And if you have a product or service you think would fit well with the theme – and/or are willing to sponsor a part of the event – we would be very grateful to have you join us. The more money we can raise, the more goes to a worthy cause.

Leonard Kirk, the great comic artist will be there doing sketches. Robert J. Sawyer, his lovely wife Carolyn, Derwin Mak and JM Frey, are four of the talented authors that will be there. We are painting people purple! There will be a demo of some awesome upcoming Xbox games! And a ton more of things to do and unique events!

(end shameless plug)

Really, things are… mostly good. I am working with some great people on some great projects – was on set for some One Week in Windchocombe pickups not too long ago (photos are here for your viewing pleasure) and if anything, I am trying to figure out how to function without sleep because there are so many projects on my plate and items on my to-do list.

Now, off to catch up on accounting! Til next time… love you all!

Of blood and books!

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

August has been a busy month for me, in the best possible way. “One Week in Windchocombe” has been in full swing, and it’s been a blast to work on. We’re already getting some press, and of course, I’ll share what I can when I can about the project. In the meantime, have a couple images:

Also, my ebook, “From Page to Screen and Everything in Between” is now available for purchase. It started as a seminar for an arts and technology conference I was invited to speak at this past year, and I spent a lot of time revising and re-organizing the material into a 25-page ebook. It’s designed to help any independent filmmakers who want to refine their process, avoid pitfalls, produce high-value work on an independent budget, or even get started in the business.

Check it out here.

I’ll be slowing down a bit in September and also getting back to the gym (I stopped as part of role prep for “One Week”). Perhaps more importantly, I will once again be taking commissions for modeling/photography work. If you or anyone else you know needs either a model or photographer (or an actor/improviser, for that matter) drop me an email and we’ll discuss your project. I offer very affordable rates and love working with new people.

Lastly, as a special gift to all of my readers, I wanted to share a page from my ebook with you:
Starting Out

If you’re going to make films, do it because you love it. It’s not glamorous, it’s a hell of a lot of work, and especially when you’re starting out it can be one of the most ambitious pursuits for some of the tiniest rewards. A lot of people outside the process won’t understand the sheer volume of time that goes into filmmaking, and film in general is a business of a thousand rejections and a handful of approvals. You will make mistakes, you will discover later that you could’ve done something a lot better, and if you really are pushing yourself (and especially if you have a lot of other life commitments) you might even burn out. That’s the brutal reality of it, right there.

But if you’ve got a burning idea, if you’ve got the passion for it, if you’re going to be more miserable or bored not doing it… then do it. Ask yourself why and what you want to create: do you want to make a fan film for your favourite TV series? Do you want to film something short and silly to generate hits on Youtube? Do you have a story you want to bring to life? Do you want to enter film festivals? Once you have that question answered, then it’s time to get started.

Especially on your first film, keep in mind that it takes time to build up a name, to build credibility for yourself and to find reliable people to work with. Conducting and portraying yourself as a dedicated, organized professional, right from when you meet someone for the first time to when the end product screens will make people that much more likely to want to work with you and be interested in what you’re doing.

Learning to be organized – or how to at least appear to be organized – will help your production run that much more smoothly. Always honouring and being early for scheduling commitments like meetings and call times shows that you’re reliable. Getting prepared before shoots or meetings, knowing exactly what you need, and taking your time to get everything set up properly will go far in helping you achieve professional-looking results in the end. A badly run set, no matter how much money it has to waste, will still produce inferior work when compared with someone who has every detail organized and perfectly executed. And that includes planning to improvise and creatively problem solve when things don’t go 100% according to plan.

On the subject of organization, keep detailed lists of absolutely everything in your production bible – something that will be discussed later – whether it’s something like what actors need to be on set what day to what specific props and costumes you need for scene 11. And if possible, take a page from Hollywood when it comes to movie making – have as many people on set as possible to each handle a specific job. It gives everyone less to worry about and helps significantly with more professional-looking results, because there’s less for each person to focus on.

Now, you may not know five people to help keep track of costuming, seven people to help focus lights, a chef or restaurant to do the catering, and so on. That’s okay. There are times where you may need to be director, camera person, lighting, sound, script prompter, makeup artist, and seven other things all at once. Again, that’s a possible reality, especially on first projects, but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

That’s it for now. Let me know what you think of the ebook content, and I may post another page soon!

On moving to Toronto, and other big changes…

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Hey folks!
So, I am sitting here with one of my snakes crawling on me, and surrounded by contented kitties… I would say that this is the life, but it is sadly temporary. Starting Monday, aside from whatever acting gigs I book, I will also be working for an up-and-coming arts company. I am admittedly quite excited about it, and everyone there is fantastic, friendly, and passionate about what they do – it’ll be a challenging and rewarding work environment!
But enough about boring, responsible things. Have a kitten photo, from where I’m sitting:

As for my moving saga, I relocated to the lovely city of Toronto just two weeks ago (on Feb 20th), and am already getting settled into city life. I went out and got my Metropass, and have been learning the subway and bus routes that will be essential to me not paying a small fortune in gas and parking (if I were to be driving around instead.) I’m keeping my car for roadtrips, though!

I’ve made it out to a few clubs and events already, and plans are falling into place for projects for the next few months. Aside from previously-announced projects, I’ll be participating in a 24-hour film challenge next weekend (March 13-14), and I’ve been talking with and meeting new people, and reconnecting with some folks I’ve worked with before. I did coffee yesterday with David Sloma of Rockin’ Films, and we are tentatively fleshing out plans for an indie feature film to shoot this fall here in TO.
I am very much enjoying the passion and creative energy that abounds from so many people here – people who love what they do, people who are determined to succeed – it just radiates and feels amazing to be a part of.

Speaking of passionate, talented people… we wrapped Black Eve last weekend, finishing with an epic evening of party scenes. Here’s a sneak peek from the movie (yes, that’s me!):

It was definitely a great set to work on, and I am going to miss the absolutely fabulous cast and crew that devoted so much of their time and energy… this project is going to blow up huge, so keep an eye out for news and release dates.

In other acting news, I will be getting new headshots done at the end of the month (March 27, to be exact). Between that and waiting on footage so that I can re-cut my reel, I am happily impatient, to be able to show off some of the things that I’ve accomplished over the last year. The next step after that’s done will be to introduce myself to some of the Toronto agents, sign on, and find some new, good paying gigs.

Next week, I will be working on my speech on independent filmmaking for Notacon, which I am both excited and nervous about. I will be talking about my experience as production manager/producer/girl of many hats with some of the projects I’ve worked on… being able to be ‘just an actor’ on set is a whole different ballgame from when you’re pretty much running everything. Mostly, I’m nervous because this is my first huge speaking gig… but it will be good practice for Polaris, where I will be running improv and horror makeup workshops later in the summer.

Outside of that, I have more news, but it’s tentative, so you’ll have to wait til next time. Oh, and my bedroom walls are awesomely pink:

Emily’s life this week/month/etc…

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I’m trying to post more than once a month, really!
Recent stuff: My gala in Toronto went well… Olivia’s at 53 has some great food and wine, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a great night out! =)

Upcoming stuff:
-I’ll be filming a fun short next week where I’m playing a tough & unflappable Mafioso-type lady, with some snappy dialogue. It’s a local production, and I’m really looking forward to it!
-There’s a few other things in pre-production, but I’m slowly learning not to count my chickens before they hatch… so I’m trying not to talk about projects until we’re actually in production. (And then there’s the recent project I did for some exciting new technology… and that is ALL I can tell you guys right now. Man, I’m worse than a little kid with a secret, aren’t I?)
-In July, I’ll be a guest at Polaris, an awesome sci-fi and fantasy convention in Toronto. I’m super-excited to be there for the weekend and will be hanging out with Craig, Derek, and possibly Keith; we’ll be promoting A Shadow Shall Fall, talking about the production, signing autographs, and will have some awesome exclusive merchandise at our booth. Plus, there’s a few other surprises in the works… more details will come when I can give them!
-Lastly, there’s a few more auditions in the next little while, too… I’m always always always hungry for more work, which is something I think is really important for any actor.

One of my facebook contacts has been sharing daily quotes… I’m going to leave you with a couple that have really stuck with me:
“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.- One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn’t pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore faith in yourself.” Lucille Ball

“To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labor, to be given the chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy. As everyone else, I love to dunk my crust in it. But alone, it is not a diet designed to keep body and soul together.” Bette Davis

Another Quick Update.

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Hey look, another blog! So soon! (And so short, coz I’ve got some other things to finish tonight.)

Acting: Tuesday saw me doing some cool improv/clown work for an in-development film project just outside of Toronto. And I just found out that I’ve been cast as a sort of mafiosa (female crime lord) in a local project shooting in June. Pretty cool stuff, though I’m still also hoping for the jobs with the larger paycheques attached. *grin*

Photography: My work is now hanging at Olivia’s at 53. (53 Clinton St. in Toronto) Come on out Sunday May 31st at 8 pm for my gala reception!

(I’ve also decided that for my birthday this year, I want to do a gallery show of some of my current work – urban decay and ghost stories, that sort of thing… more thoughts on that later.)

Quick Update…

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Acting stuff: is going reasonably well; I’ve borrowed “Acting For The Camera” from a friend to read, to brush up on a few things, and I’ve decided to try and read a play a week to keep my brain active. Aside from the local/Toronto auditions I’ve been attending, I’ve sent one off to a fellow in Montreal for his very intriguing project.
I will be on set tomorrow to film a trailer/early test for a film called “143″. I’m looking forward to it, even with a call time of “oh my god o’clock.”
As well, I took part in an interview on May 21st, with the folks at ThatChannel. You can check out the interview here.

Photography: well, I shot a wedding on Monday. I’m pretty happy with the way the pictures have come out initially – have I mentioned I’m not a fan of people who use photoshop excessively? I’m trying to define my style more and more, and I’m realizing that I’m all about colour. Vibrant colours where they’re appropriate, and shaping the absence of colour where that’s appropriate. And I LOVE natural light best. Studio lighting has its place, of course, but the way I shoot, I prefer to use what’s there as much as possible.

Life in general: As some of you know, I was in a car accident at the end of April. My car was totalled, but I’m mostly okay. There’s definitely some days where I’m more stressed than usual, and some days where various parts of me hurt a fair bit… but such as it is. I’m getting over it, and got my new car on Friday. So, baby steps there, I guess?

A Sort of Summary…

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

This next little while is happily busy for me. Two upcoming auditions, three film festivals, and a performance Sunday night. (I’d especially love to see you all at She Speaks, which is this Sunday at Kitchener City Hall, as I will be performing live!) Plus, a few other potential film and photoshoots, both in front of and behind the camera.

As well, I’ve decided that “general website maintenance” will usually be done on Sundays… so look for a few new links appearing then.

In the mean time, I would love for YOU (yes, you!) to check this out.

And I guess the biggest news is that I’m now a redhead again. *grin* Headshots should be up Sunday as well.

One more for the list of appearances…

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Another short film I did last year, The Speed Demon will be screening this Thursday, March 5th as part of the Electric Film Festival at the Princess Cinema in Waterloo.

… Sorry, that’s all the post you get for tonight… it’s bedtime!

(Though, I will also say that we now have FIVE episodes of A Shadow Shall Fall sent out to composers. That’s halfway, not counting the pilot.)

Upcoming Appearances, & more!

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

So, I’m sitting here watching Harry Potter, and getting ready for a few new & fun things. First off, I’ve made a fan page for my photography on Facebook, and I’d love for you all to become a fan, and help me promote my business!
Yes, I will be making a page for myself as an actor soon, too!)

Secondly, a short film I was in, The Ticket, will be in TWO film festivals in March.
It will be screening on Thursday, March 19th at 7 pm, as part of the Local Focus Two festival, at Kitchener City Hall, and on Sunday, March 22nd at 7:30 pm in Ajax, as part of the SCP Film Fest.

Lastly, I will be appearing in The Windows, one of the staged readings of She Speaks, happening Sunday, March 8th at 8 pm, also at Kitchener City Hall.

I would love to see YOU – yes, you! – at any and all of these events.

For those of you who are supporting me in my endeavours… thank you. =)
And yes, I do take notice of which of my friends and acquaintances actively support me in what I do… suffice to say that your loyalty and support are dearly appreciated, and will be more than returned in kind. <3
