February Update!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Hey, at least I’m keeping this to once a month now. Hopefully more often… but at least once a month.

In big news… I’m in the middle of relocating to Toronto, where I’m looking forward to taking the Toronto industry by storm: finding new projects to tackle and meeting amazing new people to work with. New headshots and a new demo reel are on their way, to match my swanky new website layout. I’m hoping to be working full-time as an actor by the end of 2010, and I’ve set some financial goals for myself as well.

In other news, January and February have been incredible for me… I’ve been on set a few days now for Black Eve, and even with long shoot days, including a chilly day laying on the floor covered in blood… I can still say that I love this work with all my heart. There’s absolutely nothing else I’d rather be doing, nothing else that feels this worth it for me.
& I so can’t wait to see the footage from what we’ve shot so far. Yeah, I’m all about the instant gratification, I know. ;)

I also had the pleasure of doing FASS again this month… originally, when I moved to Waterloo, FASS was where I met a lot of my first friends and a lot of the theatre crowd, and while it’s not “professional theatre” per se, it definitely has a special place in my heart and is an awesome way to spend a month. I had the ‘pleasure’ of singing this time around… not just part of a group like I did in Beggar’s Opera, but I had to sing as part of a duet and some parts all by myself. For me, singing to a house full of 200 or so people is pretty terrifying… but I hope I lived up to the director’s vision. I got to take a fair bit of character inspiration from Pinky (a la Pinky and the Brain), which left me more free to be silly and not worry quite so much as to what I sounded like. I guess the universe is pushing me to take chances, because even if you told me a year ago that I’d be singing onstage for that many people, I would’ve laughed. And then hid.

Lastly, we’ve started principal photography for Making of a King, with our first shoot date outside in the snow in late January. I got to do both my own swordfighting and come up with fight choreography for a group of extras… so yes, I was in combat heaven. ;)
(When I am settled in Toronto, I’m hoping to do more regular combat work with Rapier Wit, but any time I get to fight on camera or for fun is a time where I am a happy gal.)
I’ll be starting filming of my scenes probably later this month, where I’ll be doing a lot of greenscreen work as “The Lady of the Lake.” I tried on my costume during fight rehearsals, and am pretty excited for it! That, and I’ll have lovely whorls all over my face. I am looking forward to seeing MoaK develop, and will share footage and stills when I have them!

January update!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Well, it’s only been a month this time between updates… if I didn’t have to sleep sometimes, I suspect I’d be a lot more productive. ;p

Like I mentioned on the front page of my site, I’ve got a couple of feature film projects coming up in the next couple of weeks and months. They’re both going to require a fair bit of character preparation… so far, I’ve been reading up on some of the sortid histories of the Lady of the Lake, and am preparing for a fight workshop this Saturday for Making of a King. If I get a chance, I will share some of my research here… and as tempting as it is to sit and watch some “Merlin”, I am trying to avoid it until after I’ve done filming, so as not to accidentally borrow more than I should from other interpretations of the character.

Tomorrow, I’ll be printing and thoroughly reading the script for Black Eve, and working on getting my head around some of the nuances of my character, while still tying her into and adopting as much as possible some of the horror hallmarks suitable for PIMP.

It’s actually kind of funny, the number of projects I’ve done that have been more horror/sci-fi/fantasy, vs what I would consider “mainstream” projects. That isn’t a complaint by any stretch… I love me a good death scene, for example.

In other news, I will be involved in some capacity with FASS again this year. It’s something I look forward to, to make the winter less dull and to give me a chance to reconnect with friends I often only see in January. That will be on-stage the first week of February, and as this year’s show revolves around video games, you all should be that much more excited to come see it! ;)

Anyway, among my goals for the next couple of months are to have a new demo reel cut and to get some new headshots… so be on the lookout for that! But it’s getting late, so until next time, goodnight all!

PS: Forgot to mention that I did ADR and audio commentary for Forest of the Damned, a film shot all the way back in 2007. It’s a bit embarrassing – at least to me, the perfectionist – to watch myself on screen delivering lines that were meant to be cheesy and silly… but the final overall product should be awesome. And it was great to reunite with some of the cast and crew tonight.
Alright, now bed for real.

From Bangkok to Calgary…

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

I am still trying to catch up on sleep from this past weekend! Friday night to Sunday morning, I got about two hours total of sleep… there were the two FASS shows on Friday, the afterparty, work at 9:30 in the morning on Saturday, booting off to Toronto for two auditions, coming back to do the Saturday FASS, and then the strike/party… so yeah, I slept most of Sunday for sure. The auditions went fairly well, I think, and I’m looking forward to hopefully getting lots more soon with my agent, Jeff.

Now that FASS is over, I’m a little sad (hey, it’s like a month-long party with about 100 of new and old friends) but I’m sure I’ll find new projects to distract me soon. Right now, I’m trying to get info out to musicians for A Shadow Shall Fall. At this point in time, most of the work falls to the editing/SFX team and the composers… so there’s little for me to do other than sit on my thumbs and twiddle them. Working as a production manager, I definitely have a wider, bigger, and more varied commitment than if I were “just” acting… but it’s still frustrating for me to not be able to do anything and just leave it up to other people.

I am impossible, I guess! I do, however, have a photoshoot planned for next weekend, so perhaps I’ll be sharing some new headshots soon. I’m also waiting to see if there are any decent photos from FASS this year… I played an enthusiastic, over-protective mother, who wore a lot of pink. =P

I don’t have anything terribly insightful to say, so I guess I’ll leave off for now.

New & Noteworthy!

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

This week is scary.

Scary as in super-busy, and potentially stressful for me. Nothing I won’t survive, but I’m anticipating not getting enough sleep (I know it’s coming) and everything that I need to cram into the next 48-odd hours… and yeah. Calm blue ocean, calm blue ocean.

First off, I got the last of the photos from my January special done and off to the respective clients, and Twice as Nice photography has finally finished the brochure. So, that’s something, at least… and we’re in the process of booking a wedding already. Some new photos are up on my Flickr from a couple other shoots I did this month.

I’m also in the middle of updating my stills page… soon, there will be a few snaps from a commercial I recently did for TA Appliances. If you scroll down past the Film & TV section, you will find the newly-added commercials section!

More timely, though… FASS opens TONIGHT. I’m doing formal photography at the after-party, and then tomorrow, I’m supervising the food between shows. Eeep. Saturday, I have two auditions in Toronto… and then there’s closing night of the show.
I still need to find time in the near future to get more headshots done, too! And, sadly, my taxes aren’t going to do themselves this year, so there’s that, too.

One day at a time, I suppose.

Off to get ready for tonight!

Exciting Things!

Friday, January 30th, 2009

So, first off… I did make my final decision on an agency, and I’ll now be with JBMentertainment. Out of everyone I interviewed with, Jeff seemed the most “real”, which is something that is really important to me. Other agents and agencies were nice as well, but for me, one of my criteria was “if we were to meet randomly on the street, would this be someone that I could get along easily with?” And, while I can get along well with most people, there are obviously certain people that I will mesh with better.

As Derek put it, I do tend to be “everyone’s friend,” on set and otherwise. I definitely take pride in being professional and doing an excellent job while I’m working… but especially at a photoshoot or during filming, I also want everyone to be in good spirits and for things to flow well. And for that, there needs to be at least a little bit of camaraderie. Or, as I’ve also heard it put: “people are going to remember if you’re a pain in the ass on set, and you won’t get invited back.” Having been on both sides of the set (as an actor, and as the production team) I know how true this is… and I like to be the opposite of a pain in the arse whenever possible.

As a side note, I feel a little lost at the moment – there’s plenty I’m sure I should be doing, but nothing immediate comes to mind. Hence, I blog.

If nothing else, there’s FASS rehearsal tonight. The show’s up next weekend already… January has gone by quickly!

Oh, I’ve just thought of something… there’s a big long list for “next steps” with A Shadow Shall Fall. So, I’ll be doing that for a couple of hours, before heading out.
PS: We’re almost at 200 fans on Facebook already; if you’re not already a fan, help that number grow!
